Medellín Christmas Lights 2026: The Complete Guide (Alumbrados)

Every December, Medellín transforms. Millions of bulbs turn the river, the parks and the hills into one of the most famous Christmas displays on the planet —so famous that travelers plan entire trips around it. Here is everything known so far about Medellín's 2026 Christmas Lights (Alumbrados): when, where, how much they cost (spoiler: nothing) and the prettiest way to experience them.

When are Medellín's 2026 Christmas Lights?

Let's be honest: EPM —the utility that builds them— confirms the exact dates around November each year, so the official 2026 dates aren't out yet. We'll update this guide the moment they are. But the tradition is as reliable as a paisa December: the switch-on is usually in late November or the first weekend of December, and the lights stay on until mid-January.

For reference, the most recent edition —2025 (verified, November 2025)— was switched on November 28, 2025, and glowed for 47 nights, until January 14, 2026. If 2026 follows the same pattern, pencil in the last week of November.

Where to see them: the river is the star

The most famous setting is the Medellín River: kilometers of water and banks covered in light that reflect on the current. It's the postcard that made the city world-famous. But it isn't the only spot —in 2025 there were 61 illuminated locations across the city, including:

• The Medellín River corridor and Parques del Río — the heart of the display.
• Avenida La Playa, right downtown.
• The Ayacucho Tram corridor.
• Parks across the 16 communes and 5 townships, so every neighborhood gets its Christmas.

How much do they cost? Nothing

The lights are the city's gift: public and free. EPM organizes them and you can wander freely. The only thing that "costs" is whatever you decide to eat along the way —and in December, between buñuelos and natilla, resistance is futile.

The prettiest way to see them: an e-bike along the river

Here's our favorite tip (yes, it's our business —allow us the wink): the Medellín River bike path runs right alongside the main display. That means you can glide through the river lights with no parking to hunt for, no getting stuck in December's brutal traffic, and none of the slog of walking for kilometers.

• Go on a weekday or early evening if you can: December weekends pack the riverside.
• Bring a light layer: nights by the river are cool.
