Every December, Medellín changes. The streets, the parks, the houses and the neighbourhoods fill up with lights, colour and families out celebrating one of the best-loved seasons of the year.
Most visitors picture seeing the lights on foot, by car, by bus, or by stringing together several rides through the night. But there is another way to experience them: riding through Medellín on an electric bike.
You do not need to be a cyclist, and you do not need to have ever considered a bike tour. With one honest caveat: the bike does not race through every spot. In areas with big crowds we slow down, walk alongside the bikes, or change part of the route. Safety and respect for pedestrians always come first. Even so, adapting to the city on a bike is far easier than doing it in a car.
Medellín has more lights than the guidebooks list
The official displays are only one part of Christmas in Medellín.
In December, houses, balconies, parks, whole streets and entire neighbourhoods light up too. Some families have decorated their homes for years, and there are blocks where neighbours compete good-naturedly to put together the most beautiful display.
Those lights tell another story about the city: neighbours chatting in doorways, children roaming the block, families decorating together, small traditions no tourist guide records.
A ride lets you find them. A decorated house appears, or a particularly bright street, or a block party, and you stop. Without depending on a car park or on whether the bus can pull over.
That is perhaps the biggest difference here: you do not only visit the famous spots, you also discover the Christmas that happens along the way.

When you see Medellín from inside a vehicle there is a separation between you and the city. The lights slide past the window and you keep moving at the pace of the traffic.

You hear the music from the neighbourhoods, you feel the temperature of the night, the smells of December food reach you, and you see the decorations in detail. During the Christmas season we adapt the route according to which displays are running, how the city is moving, safety conditions and the most interesting spots on any given night. That flexibility is precisely one of the advantages of exploring Medellín by bike.
What time does it start
Christmas departures are scheduled between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. That way the ride begins in the shift from afternoon to night and continues once the lights are on.

Do I need cycling experience?
You do not need to be a cyclist, but you do need to know how to ride and feel comfortable on a bike.
