How to Choose an E-Bike Tour in Medellín: What to Ask Before You Book

There are plenty of electric bike tours in Medellín, and on a screen they all look identical: nice photo, "explore the city", a price. The actual experience varies enormously.

This isn't here to talk you into booking with us. It's the list of questions we would ask ourselves if we were booking in a city we didn't know. If it helps you choose better, even if you choose someone else, it did its job.

1. Is the bike actually electric, with pedal assist?

It sounds obvious and it isn't. Some operators advertise a "bike tour" and hand you a regular bicycle. In Medellín that's decisive: this city has real hills, and the gap between grinding up a climb and riding it with a motor is the gap between an outing and a workout.

Ask directly: is it electric, is it pedal-assisted, and how much battery range does it have for the route we're doing?

2. Is the guide local?

A local guide is not the same as someone who memorised a script. The difference shows in three things: they can read the city, they know where not to be at certain hours, and they answer questions that weren't in the script.

In neighbourhoods like Comuna 13, where the murals have no plaques explaining them, this completely changes what you take away.

3. How many people are in the group?

It's the question with the biggest impact and the one fewest people ask. A group of six and a group of twenty are not the same activity: in the big one you move at the pace of the slowest, stops stretch out, and talking to the guide stops being possible.

Ask for the maximum group size, not the average.

4. Helmet, insurance, and what happens if something goes wrong?

A helmet included should be the minimum. Also ask whether there's insurance, and what happens if the bike fails halfway: is there a spare, do they come back for you, can the guide fix a puncture?

That isn't paranoia. It's the difference between a ten-minute hitch and a ruined afternoon.

5. Which route exactly, and how long?

"A ride around the city" tells you nothing. Ask for the specific stops. A good operator names them without hesitating, because they ride them every day.

And watch the duration: a three-hour tour with six stops isn't really making six stops. Compare stops per hour, not total stops.

6. What happens if it rains?

It rains in Medellín, usually mid-afternoon. Ask whether they reschedule, refund, or simply carry on. All three are valid answers, but it's better to know which one before you're standing in a downpour.

7. Can you cancel?

Ask how far in advance and whether there's a refund. A serious operator has it written down. If the answer is vague, you've already learned something important about how they work.

8. Is it pitched at your level?

Be honest with yourself about two things: how long it's been since you rode a bike, and how comfortable you are with city traffic.

The electric bike solves the effort, not the skill. If it's been fifteen years, say so when you book: a good operator adjusts the route or gives you a few minutes to find your balance before setting off.

Red flags

• They won't give you the exact meeting point until you've paid.
• They won't answer how many people are in the group.
• They promise too many stops for the time the tour lasts.
• The price is far below everyone else's with no explanation. Electric bikes cost money in maintenance and batteries; if someone is well below, something is being cut.
• No mention of helmets.

On safety, with judgement
