Medellín with kids: the family guide to the city of eternal spring

A city that plays on the family's side

Medellín has three things parents appreciate within ten minutes of landing: a 20-25°C climate all year round — you pack one suitcase, not four —, a culture that adores children, and so many parks and green spaces that "what do we do now?" becomes a problem of abundance. Family travel here is safe, affordable compared with similar destinations and above all varied: in a single day you can ride a cable car up to a cloud forest and end up touching stingrays in an aquarium.

The must-dos with kids

Parque Explora — The interactive science museum, home to South America's largest freshwater aquarium on the Amazon side, a vivarium and halls where touching everything isn't just allowed — it's the point. For kids of any age, and for parents too. It sits opposite the Botanical Garden and Parque Norte: the city's perfect family triangle.

Botanical Garden — Free entry, iguanas roaming loose, a spectacular orchid pavilion and lawns made for picnics. The easiest, cheapest morning plan in Medellín.

Parque Norte — The city's classic amusement park, right next to the Botanical Garden. Rides for every age, paisa parents' nostalgia included.

Parque Arví — The full adventure: you get there by metro and then by cable car, flying over the city's rooftops and then over forest. Up top: fresh air, trails, picnics and a farmers' market. For kids, the journey IS the attraction.

El Castillo — A real Gothic castle in El Poblado, with French gardens and a museum. The family photo nobody expects to bring home from Colombia.

Barefoot Park (Pies Descalzos) — The name is literal: sand, water and bamboo, made for taking off your shoes and playing. Free, in the middle of the financial district, and kids understand it faster than adults do.

Parques del Río — Kilometres of trails, bike lanes, gardens and play areas along the river. Perfect for the family to stretch its legs at sunset.

Pueblito Paisa — The replica of an Antioquian village on top of Nutibara hill: plaza, church, balconies, ice cream and the best introductory panorama of the city.

On Sunday, ciclovía

On Sunday and holiday mornings, Medellín closes avenues to cars and hands them over to bikes, skates and prams. It's free, it's safe, and it's the prettiest postcard of the city doing what it does best: living outdoors.

Real logistics for parents

• Weather: eternal spring, but with afternoon downpours in the rainy season. A light rain jacket in the backpack and you're set — and remember the local wisdom: waiting out the rain is a plan too.
• Transport: the metro is clean, safe and kids love it — the cable car counts as a ride. For night journeys or sleeping children, use a ride app.
• Prices and hours: they change with the seasons; check each park's official pages a few days before your visit rather than trusting outdated blogs (including this one — that's why we don't print fees).
• Food: restaurants are kid-friendly by default. The universal paisa children's menu: rice, beans, patacón and fresh juice. Nobody leaves hungry.
• Health: sunscreen always — the altitude is deceiving — and hydration on outdoor plans.
