How Many Days Do You Need in Medellín? 3, 4 & 5-Day Plans

It's the question we get every single week on WhatsApp: "How many days should I give Medellín?" The local short answer: 3 minimum, 4 ideal, 5 if you want to add Guatapé. Here's the day-by-day breakdown.

3-Day Plan — The essentials

Day 1 — Arrival + orientation

  • Morning: arrival, check in to El Poblado or Laureles, Paisa breakfast.
  • Afternoon: Panoramic e-bike tour — viewpoints, Pueblito Paisa, the river. It's the best first day: it orients you and shows you the geography.
  • Evening: dinner in Provenza or Parque Lleras.

Day 2 — Culture & transformation

  • Morning: Comuna 13 e-bike tour with a local guide. History, graffiti, escalators.
  • Afternoon: historic downtown — Plaza Botero, Antioquia Museum, Palace of Culture.
  • Evening: dinner in Laureles — local vibe, less touristy.

Day 3 — Urban nature + farewell

  • Morning: Botanical Garden + Parque Explora.
  • Afternoon: shopping at the MOVE Shop (souvenirs & crafts), lunch at the Restaurant.
  • Evening: flight.

4-Day Plan — The sweet spot

Add an extra day for the Urban Tour + gastronomic experience. We recommend:

  • Day 1: Panoramic e-bike tour (orientation).
  • Day 2: Comuna 13 with local guide.
  • Day 3: Urban Tour combining culture with the food stop at MOVE's Restaurant in Conquistadores. Contemporary Paisa lunch included.
  • Day 4: free morning (market, specialty coffee at our Coffee & Frappés in Laureles), afternoon shopping or spa, departure.

5-Day Plan — Adding Guatapé

Same as the 4-day plan + a full day in Guatapé:

  • Early start (6:30 AM).
  • Climb El Peñol rock (740 steps — every one is worth it).
  • Lakeside lunch.
  • Walk the colorful town — its painted "zócalos" are unique in Colombia.
  • Back to Medellín around 7 PM.

Ideally do it on day 4 or 5 — you'll be acclimated and rested.

What if I only have 2 days?

It works but it's tight:

  • Day 1: Comuna 13 + historic downtown.
  • Day 2: Panoramic or Urban e-bike tour + Provenza at sunset.

In this case a guided tour pays double: you maximize every hour.

And for a full week?

You have room for:

  • All 5 days of the full plan.
  • Extra day in smaller towns: Jericó, Jardín or Santa Fe de Antioquia.
  • Spa/relax day in Envigado.
  • Coffee-farm experience (2 hours away).

Paisa tips to optimize your itinerary

  1. Start with an orientation tour. Saves hours of Google Maps later.
  2. Mix activity and rest. Don't underestimate altitude (1495 m).
  3. Big lunch, light dinner. Local custom — and easier on the stomach.
  4. Keep a "wildcard" day. For improvising, resting or repeating your favorite spot.
  5. Start Guatapé early. Weekday return traffic can be heavy.

Quick summary

| Days | Recommendation | |------|----------------| | 2 | Only the essentials. Guided tour mandatory. | | 3 | Recommended minimum. Essentials covered. | | 4 | ⭐ Sweet spot. Most travelers leave happy here. | | 5 | Add Guatapé. Complete plan. | | 7+ | Deeper dives — small towns, coffee farms. |
