Best Time to Visit Medellín: Weather, Crowds & Festivals
Medellín is famous as "The City of Eternal Spring" because its temperature barely changes all year: between 18°C and 28°C (65–82°F). No winter, no scorching summer. That makes it one of the lowest-weather-risk destinations in Latin America.
But nuances exist. This local guide gives you the month-by-month breakdown.
Medellín weather — The basics
- Average temp: 22°C / 72°F
- Altitude: 1495 m / 4905 ft (altitude means no sticky heat).
- Sun: comes out almost every day, even during the rainy season.
- Rain: April–May and September–November are the rainiest. Showers are usually in the afternoon, strong but short (30–60 min).
- Dry: December–February and June–August.
Bottom line: pack layers + a light rainproof jacket. Done.
Month by month
December ⭐ — Great weather, spectacular Christmas Lights (rated among the world's best by National Geographic), festive vibe. Book in advance.
January–February ⭐ — Dry season continues, perfect sunny days. Ideal for all tours.
March — Transition starts. Still mostly dry.
April–May — Rainy season #1. You can still travel; e-bike tours run normally (showers are short).
June–August ⭐ — Dry season + peak tourist season. August brings the Flower Festival (first week): Medellín's biggest celebration.
September–November — Rainy season #2. Fewer tourists = better prices, more local feel. Great if you want quiet.
Can't-miss events by month
- Flower Festival / Feria de las Flores (1st week of August) — Silleteros parade, concerts, dog show, horseback parade. Book 2-3 months ahead.
- International Tango Festival (June) — Honoring Gardel, who died in Medellín.
- Christmas Lights / Alumbrados (Dec 1 – Jan 7) — World-class displays, especially along the river and Parque Norte.
- Mercado Campesino (year-round) — Farm-to-table products.
- Colombiamoda Fashion Week (July) — Colombian fashion + parallel events.
Do e-bikes work year-round?
Yes. Here's a Paisa advantage: because the rains are short, MOVE's e-bike tours run in any season. If it's raining at exactly your departure time, we reschedule at no cost. The most common scenario: leave under sun, brief downpour, café shelter, keep going.
The Panoramic Tour is especially beautiful when low clouds drape the mountains — incredible photos.
When to travel if you want…
- Best weather: December, January, July, August.
- Fewer tourists: September–November.
- Cheaper flights: May and September.
- Maximum events: first week of August (Flower Festival).
- Most magical vibe: December (Christmas Lights).
- Long tour-able days: year-round — daylight barely changes (Medellín is near the equator).
What to pack by season
Always:
- Layered clothing (t-shirt + light jacket).
- Comfortable sneakers.
- Sunscreen (altitude increases UV).
- Hat or cap.
Extra for rainy season:
- Light rain jacket (not an umbrella — wind wins).
- Quick-dry sneakers.
A local's final recommendation
If you can choose, January or July. If you want a festival vibe, August (Flower Festival) or December (Christmas Lights). If you want lower prices and quiet, October.
Book your tours early if you're coming in high season. At MOVE we have limited e-bike slots per departure.
