Vueltiao and Typical Hats from Colombia
The vueltiao hat is the most recognized artisanal symbol of Colombia. Handwoven from caña flecha by Zenú indigenous communities of the Colombian Caribbean, each hat can take weeks of work and its quality is measured in "vueltas": from the 15-thread economical version to the 27-thread "quinceano," each vuelta represents hours of finer weaving and flexibility when rolling up.
At MOVE, we also have aguadeño hats (typical of the Coffee Region, made of iraca) and vallenato hats, each with its own history and region. The vueltiao is woven from caña flecha by Zenú communities. The number of vueltas (15, 19, 21, 23, 27) indicates the fineness and flexibility: more vueltas = more hours of weaving, softer and more rollable. The 21 and 23 are favorites for travel; the 27 is a collector's piece.
Are the hats original from Colombian artisans?
Yes. All our hats are purchased directly from workshops and cooperatives of the Colombian Caribbean (Zenú vueltiao), Aguadas (aguadeño in iraca), and Valledupar (vallenato). Each hat is crafted by the hands of artisans, it's not an industrial replica.
