Pueblito Paisa: 360° Viewpoint & How to Go

On top of Cerro Nutibara, in the middle of the city, stands a scaled reconstruction of an early twentieth-century Antioquian village: the church, the town hall, the school, the barber shop and the tavern around a cobbled square with its stone fountain. It was built in 1978 to preserve the memory of a rural architecture that was already disappearing. But the main reason to go up is what surrounds it: a viewpoint that wraps all the way around the hill and lets you understand Medellín in a single glance.

1. The Antioquian village replica
A scaled reproduction of a typical early twentieth-century Antioquian village, with its church, town hall, school, barber shop and tavern around a cobbled square. Built in 1978 as a tribute to paisa rural architecture. Nobody lives there, but it is well kept and you can walk it in twenty minutes.
2. The 360-degree viewpoint
This is the main reason to come up. From the edge of the hill you see the whole valley: downtown, El Poblado, the slopes of Robledo and Comuna 13 to the west. It is one of the few places in Medellín where you grasp in one glance how the city is built, wedged between mountains.
3. Crafts and souvenirs
The shops around the square sell Antioquian crafts, hats, carriel bags, woven mochilas and regional coffee. It is one of the more honest places in the city to buy souvenirs, because much of it is sold directly by the people who make it.
4. Traditional snacks
Obleas, pandequesos, corn arepas with fresh cheese, salpicón, mazamorra with panela. Coming up and not tasting anything would waste half the outing.
5. The climb by electric bike
This is where the electric assist changes everything: the climb up Cerro Nutibara is steep, and on foot under midday sun it is a serious walk. On an e-bike you arrive at the top without breaking a sweat, ready to enjoy the view rather than recover from the ascent.

Practical info

Getting there: the hill sits beside Avenida Nutibara, in the central-western part of the city, and a road winds around the slope up to the top.
When to go: sunset is the best moment for the light and the view, but also the busiest. On weekday mornings it is practically empty.
How long: an hour to an hour and a half is enough to walk the village, take in the full viewpoint and have something to eat.
What to bring: sunscreen and a hat, as the sun hits directly up there and there is little shade. Some cash for the stalls, most of which do not take cards.
If you go at sunset: bring a light jacket. It cools down noticeably at the top once the sun drops.
Entry: access to Pueblito Paisa and the viewpoint is free. You only pay for what you eat or buy.

Is it a real village?

No. It is a replica built in 1978 to preserve the memory of Antioquian rural architecture. Nobody lives there.

Can you see the whole city from up there?

Practically. The viewpoint wraps around the hill and from different points you can see downtown, El Poblado, the west and the north of the valley.
